At the end of May 2026, over 378,000 people were registered as unemployed or in training with the Public Employment Service (AMS) in Austria, an increase of 0.8 percent compared to the same month last year.

The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 7.1 percent, as announced by the Ministry of Social Affairs on Monday. At the same time, the number of immediately available job vacancies reported to the AMS decreased by 5.4 percent to around 79,000.

In contrast, the ÖVP Business Association, in its job monitor which analyzes all online job portals, recorded 167,000 open positions in Austria. This discrepancy highlights the tense dynamics in the domestic labor market.
