In the escalating dispute over the takeover of Commerzbank, the Italian major bank UniCredit has turned to Germany's financial regulator Bafin and accused Commerzbank of spreading false information "fortgesetzt und unablässig".
Background of the Dispute
The Italian major bank and Bank-Austria parent UniCredit sharply attacked Commerzbank in a detailed statement on Monday. It was not UniCredit, but Commerzbank, that was spreading "fortgesetzt und unablässig (...) unzutreffende und irreführende Informationen" about the takeover offer, which is regarded as hostile, the Italians declared. At the same time, UniCredit called on Bafin to investigate Commerzbank's statements and its "naheliegende Motivation, die Integrität des Übernahmeverfahrens zu beeinträchtigen und bei Stakeholdern für Verwirrung zu sorgen."
