Berlin, 02 July 2026
The Union and SPD reached agreement late in the evening in the coalition committee at the Chancellery on a reform package that came together after more than seven hours of negotiations and is intended to provide relief above all for low and middle incomes from 1 January 2027.
The German coalition partners had been working for months on a major reform package aimed at stabilising the social security systems, providing tax relief to citizens, and getting the stagnating German economy back into gear. In the decisive meeting at the Chancellery, the Union and SPD agreed late in the evening on a series of reforms, as reported by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
Even before the start of the meeting at the Chancellery, it was said that there was already agreement on around 30 reform measures. After more than seven hours of negotiations, however, they gave no details. These are to be presented to the public only the following day, according to sources in the negotiating circles.
