The British government has unveiled plans under which asylum seekers in the UK would have to repay the costs of their accommodation and support, amounting to up to £10,000, before being able to apply for permanent leave to remain.
Background to the reform
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday that asylum seekers should in future be required to contribute to the state's expenditure on their accommodation and support. Under the plans, affected adults would have to repay up to £10,000 (around €11,600) per person once they have an income. Children are to be exempted from the repayment obligation.
Repayment is to be made in monthly instalments, similar to a loan. Under the plans, asylum seekers would only be able to apply for permanent leave to remain once the full amount has been repaid in full. According to the information provided, the regulation is not to apply retroactively.
