The British government plans to automatically block social media apps for 16- and 17-year-olds between midnight and 6 a.m. and to deactivate features considered addictive by default.

London is announcing a comprehensive social media law set to take effect next year. The United Kingdom wants to introduce a comprehensive social media law next year. The regulations provide that common platforms will become completely inaccessible for under-16s, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Threads, Reddit, Twitch, and Kick.

Technology Minister Liz Kendall presented supplementary measures for older teens in London. For 16- and 17-year-olds, nighttime usage restrictions from midnight to 6:00 a.m. are to be activated by default in the corresponding apps. Apps are to automatically lock out teens at night. The restrictions are part of a large legislative package that at its core provides for a social media ban for under-16s.
