The United States and several Latin American states have called on Colombia in a joint statement to carry out an orderly and constitutional transfer of power following the presidential election.
In the joint statement, signed by the US, Argentina, Ecuador and El Salvador, among others, the governments said they were observing recent statements and actions with great concern that, without sufficient evidence, cast doubt on the integrity of the Colombian electoral process. The governments said they viewed with "great concern" recent statements and actions that fueled uncertainty about the institutional transition, according to the letter.
The background is the ongoing conflict over recognition of the election result. Outgoing left-wing President Gustavo Petro had refused to recognize the victory of his right-wing successor Abelardo de la Espriella in the runoff and had raised allegations of electoral fraud. The signatories indirectly rejected these allegations, emphasizing that only the will of the voters as determined by the competent electoral authorities confers democratic legitimacy on state action.
