Washington, August 11, 2026

The US climate agency NCEI has classified July 2026 in the United States as the warmest July since the beginning of records more than 130 years ago.

The agency said on Tuesday that the nationwide average temperature in July had exceeded the previous record. Accordingly, July 2026 was the warmest month in the entire record, which goes back to 1895. Compared with the long-term average, a significantly elevated mean temperature was registered.

Significantly above-average values were recorded particularly in the western interior, the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the northern Plains and the upper Midwest, as well as in parts of the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. The agency spoke of a widespread heatwave that had gripped large parts of the country. Temperatures in the states of Alaska and Hawaii were also above average, according to the report.
