Berlin, 31 August 2026
With the end of the meteorological summer on 31 August 2026, medical professionals, weather services and health authorities in Germany are drawing up a preliminary balance characterised by above-average heat, an increased number of heat-related emergencies and indications of a high number of unreported heat-related deaths.
The German Weather Service (DWD) looks back on a summer that was significantly warmer than the long-term average across large parts of Germany. Particularly in July and August, the measuring stations repeatedly recorded heat waves with daily maximum temperatures that sometimes exceeded 35 degrees Celsius. At night, too, temperatures barely dropped in many places, which further increased the strain on the human organism.
