The US Congress has, with a narrow majority, approved a funding package of nearly 70 billion US dollars for the immigration agency ICE and the border protection agency CBP, to be made available to President Donald Trump through 2029.
Background: Deadly Shootings in Minnesota
The bill first passed the Senate and was subsequently approved in the House of Representatives by a vote of 214 to 212. Only President Trump's signature is now needed before the law can take effect. According to reports from the dpa news agency, the funds are earmarked through 2029 and amount to the equivalent of more than 60 billion euros.
The political struggle was triggered by the dispute over the budget of the Department of Homeland Security, to which the migration agencies are subordinate. This was prompted in particular by the deadly shootings of two US citizens by federal agents during operations earlier this year in the US state of Minnesota. Subsequently, a dispute erupted in Congress over the budget of the Department of Homeland Security, to which the migration agencies are subordinate.
