US Defense Secretary Hegseth announces mandatory testosterone tests for soldiers aged 30 and over

Minister's Justification

Hegseth described it as a "heilige Pflicht" (sacred duty) to preserve what he called the tactical advantage of the US armed forces. The "einzelne Kämpfer" (individual fighter) has always been the most important tactical advantage of the United States. Preserving this advantage, he called a "heilige Pflicht."

With regard to physical requirements, Hegseth said that anyone who does not meet "körperliche Standards auf männlichem Niveau für Kampfpositionen" (male-level physical standards for combat positions), does not shave, or does not want to look professional, it is time for a new position or a new career.

Since taking office, Hegseth has been driving changes in his ministry. Last year, for example, he announced new fitness standards. At the same time, he repeatedly invokes a warrior ethos in the military – much like the ideal image of a traditionally masculine fighter.

Part of a Series of Reforms

The initiative fits into a series of measures with which Hegseth emphasizes discipline and fighting spirit in the armed forces. The US government has since referred to the Defense Department as the "Department of War."

The testosterone test is to take place as part of an already existing annual health examination, as the video makes clear. This adds another component to the routine examination already provided for.

Open Questions on Implementation

Hegseth did not provide further details in the video about the exact procedure, possible consequences of low values, or the participation of specific branches of the armed forces. He also did not address possible costs or logistical questions.

The Pentagon's response to inquiries about operational details was not immediately forthcoming. It remains unclear as of now when exactly the tests will be carried out across the board and what threshold values will apply.

According to Hegseth's own statements, the aim of the measure is to ensure the long-term readiness of the troops. He explicitly links the tests to the image of the "einzelnen Kämpfers" as the central tactical advantage of the United States.
