In the United States, Republicans and Democrats are competing for control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, while Donald Trump expects to preserve Republican majorities.

Democrats need at least one additional victory among the seven states where Trump performed very strongly two years ago to gain a Senate majority. These are Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. The outcome of the Senate election will therefore also depend on whether the opposition parties can win back Trump’s former strongholds.

Trump expressed confidence before the election that Republicans would retain their majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate. This expectation contrasts with the narrow conditions under which Democrats would need to achieve a Senate majority.
