Paris, May 18, 2026
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a 30-day extension of the sanctions waiver on Russian oil during a meeting of G7 finance ministers in Paris on Monday, according to three officials who spoke to POLITICO. The decision prolongs a temporary measure first introduced in early March and renewed in April, despite earlier signals that the relief would lapse.
Global Oil Market Strains
The extension comes as global oil supplies remain constrained by the ongoing Iran war, which has driven up prices and hampered economic growth. Bessent previously told the Associated Press that the waiver on Russian oil sanctions was set to expire, but the persistent supply crunch forced a reversal.
