The US Federal Reserve has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged for the fifth time in a row, in the range of 3.50 to 3.75 percent, thereby pushing back against calls from within its own ranks for a rate hike.

Vote with Three Dissents

The decision was made on Monday at the second rate meeting under new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. As the published vote shows, nine members of the monetary policy committee voted for a rate pause, while three members backed an increase to address persistently high inflation. There was no majority in the committee for a cut.

Warsh used the press conference following the meeting to reaffirm the fight against inflation as the central task of the central bank. Monetary policy would remain data-dependent, and the committee would align every further decision with the development of consumer prices and employment, the Fed chief said. No concrete rate path was named.
