The US government under President Donald Trump has accused the National Museum of American History and its parent organization, the Smithsonian Institution, of ideological activism in a White House report that became public over the weekend.

The report accuses the museum's leadership of using exhibitions as a political instrument to divide and discourage citizens rather than conveying a shared national heritage. "It divides and discourages," according to the allegations in the document. The government's main objection is to a portrayal that sees the history of the United States as shaped predominantly by oppression, racism, and injustice.

The Smithsonian Institution responded to the accusations with a statement: "Seit mehr als 180 Jahren dient das Smithsonian der amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit mit unparteiischer und unabhängiger Forschung, und wir werden diesem Anspruch auch weiterhin gerecht werden". The institution thereby emphasized its claim to academic neutrality and distance from the political agenda of the day.
