The US government has so far refunded approximately 81 billion US dollars (around 71 billion euros) in tariffs to companies in the current fiscal year, after the Supreme Court struck down large parts of the additional tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump in February.
As the US Treasury Department announced the previous day, the refunds in the fiscal year that began in October 2025 total 81 billion US dollars. That corresponds to approximately 71 billion euros. A ministry spokesperson confirmed that the overwhelming majority of these repayments go back to the Supreme Court ruling from February.
The court had ruled at the time that the president had overstepped his authority with much of the additional tariffs he had imposed. As a result, numerous companies filed applications for refunds of the tariffs they had paid.

According to the Treasury Department, the refunds primarily concern the months of May and June. In these two months, the largest portion of the total 81 billion dollars flowed back to the applicants.
Throughout the entire previous fiscal year, tariff refunds had amounted to just five billion US dollars according to the ministry. The current figure exceeds this sum many times over and marks an extraordinary item in the US federal balance sheet.
