The US government under President Donald Trump has threatened around 60 trading partners – including the EU, Switzerland, and India – with additional tariffs of 10 to 12.5 percent, accusing them of not doing enough to combat the import of products made with forced labor.

The investigation by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer began on March 12. According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, a tariff rate of 10 percent is to apply to the EU, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, Argentina, and the United Kingdom, among others. A rate of 12.5 percent is planned for 45 other countries, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. The tariffs will not take effect immediately; objections can be raised until July 6, and a hearing is scheduled for July 7.
