The US Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday published a new regulation aimed at significantly shortening asylum proceedings in the United States and enabling deportations without prior hearings – critics are warning of the consequences for several hundred thousand people.
The new order was published on Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security. The department justified the move with the goal of reducing the backlog of pending asylum applications. In the future, numerous asylum proceedings are to be referred directly to immigration judges at the US Department of Justice, who can order deportation.
According to the department, up to 444,724 pending asylum proceedings could be affected by the move. That corresponds to around 31 percent of the approximately 1.43 million pending asylum cases in the United States. Previously, asylum seekers had the opportunity to present their case in person in an interview with an official from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). That option no longer exists.
