A quarter millennium on the Hudson

The United States marked 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, with celebrations that blended national pomp and political theater. Large sailing ships from more than 20 countries sailed into New York Harbor, where military jets including the US Navy flight demonstration squadron flew overhead leaving trails in the national colors of red, white, and blue. In Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate was illuminated in the same colors from sunset until midnight to mark the anniversary.
