US military commanders have warned that American forces have expended nearly 80% of key missile interceptors, leaving stockpiles at what sources describe as dangerously low levels, even as diplomatic efforts continue to ease tensions with Iran.

The warning, reported by multiple outlets citing US officials, highlights how quickly the United States has burned through its inventory of interceptors used by Patriot and THAAD air-defense systems. One source familiar with the assessments said munitions stocks have fallen to levels that would complicate the military's ability to defend allied bases, shipping lanes and US positions in the Gulf from continued missile and drone attacks.

Patriot and THAAD systems are the cornerstone of US air defense against ballistic missiles, and the missiles they fire are among the most expensive single munitions in the American arsenal. According to the figures cited in the reporting, interceptors from both systems are among those most affected by the drawdown. Each engagement can require multiple interceptors per incoming threat, rapidly accelerating consumption rates.
