Private incomes in the US rose surprisingly strongly in July, while the core rate of the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index held steady at 3.3 percent on a year-on-year basis.
Income Growth Exceeds Expectations
The gains in private income recorded in July exceeded economists' expectations and drew attention in financial markets. Stronger wage growth is seen as a support for private consumption, which is a key driver of the US economy.
At the same time, the Commerce Department released current data on price developments. The core PCE index, which excludes energy and food prices, remained at 3.3 percent on a year-on-year basis, in line with the level of previous months. Economists had expected this figure.
