US federal prosecutors have summoned four journalists from the "New York Times" after they had reported on security flaws in the new Air Force One following the NATO summit in Turkey; the Justice Department justifies the step with concerns about the disclosure of classified information.

The subpoenas were served on Friday by federal officials at the homes of the affected journalists, as the "New York Times" reported. The recipients were informed that they would have to testify "in Bezug auf einen mutmaßlichen Verstoß gegen das Bundesstrafrecht." The US Justice Department stated that the government was concerned about the disclosure of classified information.

The background to the proceedings is a "New York Times" report about the new presidential aircraft. The newspaper had written that Trump had been forced to switch to a different plane after the NATO summit in Turkey because the newly acquired Boeing 747-8, which Qatar had gifted to the United States at a value of approximately 400 million dollars (350 million euros), did not feature the same security systems as other presidential aircraft. Trump had it converted into a government aircraft.
