Background: Plane switch at NATO summit

The background to the subpoenas is reporting by four "Times" journalists about a plane switch by Donald Trump during the NATO summit in Turkey. As the newspaper reported, citing anonymous sources, Trump had flown on the advice of the Secret Service on the older Air Force One from the summit to the British military base at Mildenhall. There he had then transferred to the new aircraft that Qatar had gifted to the U.S. government.

In a further article, the "New York Times" had reported that the new presidential aircraft did not yet have all of the security and defense systems of the previous plane. The U.S. government and Trump himself dismissed security concerns as the reason for the plane switch. The federal prosecutor's office justified the subpoenas, according to the newspaper, only with an unspecified alleged violation of federal criminal law.

Reaction from the newsroom

David McCraw, attorney for the "New York Times" newsroom, stated according to a communication that the subpoenas were "missbräuchlich und unzulässig" and "in böser Absicht erwirkt worden, um die 'Times' für ihre Berichterstattung abzustrafen". McCraw has long served as legal counsel to the newsroom and regularly represents the newspaper in press law disputes. With this, the newspaper accuses the prosecutor's office of targeted retaliation for unwanted reporting.
