Nuremberg, 30 August 2026
The US military struck an Iranian island where Iranian forces were preparing to launch mines, according to a US official, in an operation that drew a sharp warning of retaliation from Tehran.
The strike targeted Larak island in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which a significant share of global oil shipments pass, the US official said. The official, cited in reporting from Nuremberg, Germany, described the target as a site where Iranian forces were preparing to deploy mines into the waterway.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the attack in a statement carried by Iran's state broadcaster, saying the assault caused "the martyrdom and injury of several of our fighters and compatriots." The statement added that the attack will "result in punishment of the aggressor," signaling Tehran's intent to respond militarily.
