The Supreme Court of the United States ruled on Tuesday that the continuation of the planned ballroom construction at the White House in Washington does not have to be stopped for the time being.
The justices rejected an emergency motion by the preservation organization National Trust for Historic Preservation, which had sought to halt the construction with reference to historic building fabric. In a footnote, Chief Justice John Roberts clarified that the proceedings concern exclusively the above-ground structures; a federal court had previously expressly permitted the completion of the underground bunker — the presidential emergency shelter.
