The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled, by a majority of six to three votes, that individual states may independently decide whether transgender persons may participate in women's and girls' sports competitions.

The justices made clear that regulations may be based on the sex assigned at birth. In doing so, the Court upheld corresponding laws that had been passed in a growing number of US states in recent years.

According to statistics referenced by the Court in its decision, 27 US states have now enacted laws excluding trans individuals from women's and girls' sports. The trend has steadily intensified since 2020.

The ruling fell along ideological lines: the conservative majority of the Court carried the decision, while the three liberal justices dissented. Justice Sonia Sotomayor criticized the decision in a dissenting opinion.
