The EU Parliament has approved new tariffs on steel imports, limiting duty-free quantities and doubling penalties for excess shipments, in a bid to protect European producers from global oversupply and US trade pressures.

Under the new rules, the duty-free import quota for steel products will be reduced by 47% to 18.3 million tons annually. Any imports exceeding this limit will face a 50% tariff, up from the previous 25% rate.

The measures aim to address what EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic called 'distortions in global steel trade', where Asian producers account for 74% of global supply while EU production has fallen by a fifth since 2018.
