US Vice President JD Vance played down the Watergate scandal during an appearance at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in California and drew parallels between the former President Richard Nixon and Donald Trump.

Background: The Watergate Scandal

Vance said the notion that Watergate brought down a presidency was "crazy." Instead, he claimed that the so-called "deep state" toppled Nixon — and compared this to what "the same groups and institutions" had attempted during Trump's first term in office. Vance provided no evidence for these claims.

At the same time, the Vice President staged himself as Nixon's political heir at the event. "A young senator, vice president, writes a few bestsellers, is hated by the media — that sounds kind of like JD Vance," he said. The backdrop is the widely held assumption that Vance is positioning himself for a 2028 presidential run and thus preparing to succeed Trump.
