US Vice President JD Vance acknowledged errors by the US government in handling the investigation files on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in the "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast, while rejecting the accusation of deliberate cover-up.
Vance said verbatim that the communication had been "completely botched." When asked whether the government had deliberately mismanaged the release of the files, he replied: "If people want to say we mishandled the Epstein release: guilty." With that, the Vice President publicly admitted shortcomings on the part of his own administration.
At the same time, Vance rejected the broader suspicion that the flawed approach was meant to conceal something. He said: "But do I think we botched it because we were trying to hide something? No." Vance attributed the communication problems to false claims that had been circulating.
Background: Bondi's statements and the expectations
Specifically, Vance referred to a previously much-noted remark by the then Attorney General Pam Bondi, according to which a "client list" of the convicted sex offender was sitting on her desk. That statement had raised expectations that were subsequently not fulfilled, thereby reinforcing public distrust.
