Vienna, Austria — May 12, 2026 Vienna doctor shortage 2026: 600 training spots missing, warns chamber The Vienna Medical Chamber issued an urgent appeal Tuesday for more training slots for junior physicians, warning that a critical bottleneck in medical education threatens to exacerbate Austria’s worsening doctor shortage.
Critical Shortage in Training Slots
The chamber’s president, Johannes Steinhart, described the current system as a "highly problematic bottleneck," with over 600 training positions lacking for newly graduated doctors in Vienna alone. "We are running headlong into a healthcare emergency," Steinhart said, adding that hospitals are already grappling with staffing gaps while 1,300 additional positions are needed in private practices.
The impending "retirement wave of baby boomers," which the chamber has warned about for 15 years, will further strain the system, Steinhart noted. "We must ensure enough new talent," he emphasized, calling for hospitals to receive adequate funding to create the missing training slots.
