The Vienna police are searching for two suspected Romanian nationals aged between 40 and 55 who allegedly sold a jeweler on Thaliastraße in Vienna-Ottakring a worthless gold-plated metal plate instead of real fine gold on January 13, 2026, making off with several thousand euros.
The crime occurred on January 13, 2026, at around 10:40 a.m. on Thaliastraße in Vienna's 16th district. According to the police, a transaction involving supposed fine gold took place between the victim and two previously unknown men. A jeweler on Thaliastraße in Vienna-Ottakring is said to have been swindled by the two fraudsters.
The two suspects offered the jeweler metal plates that they declared to be fine gold. According to the police, the buyer was deliberately distracted by one of the two suspects, while the second suspect kept a test plate concealed beneath the plates – which he pretended to cut out of the offered metal plates – and handed it to the victim.
