Vienna S-Bahn Main Line Remains Closed After Cable Fire – Cause Unknown

Judith Winder, spokesperson for Wiener Linien, confirmed the current status of the investigations to the news agency APA. According to her, the investigation into the cause of the cable fire is in full swing. An official statement on the exact cause of the fire was not initially available. Wiener Linien referred to ongoing technical examinations by the responsible experts.

The closure of the heavily used connection is severely impacting public transport in Vienna. Between the hubs Wien-Mitte, Wien Hauptbahnhof, and Praterstern station, commuters have to rely on replacement services and diversions. Wiener Linien set up replacement buses and recommended using alternative routes via the outer branches of the Vienna S-Bahn.

Impact on Commuters and Airport Traffic

According to Wiener Linien, the affected section is one of the most heavily used routes in the entire Vienna local transport network. The connection between Floridsdorf and Vienna Airport runs over precisely that main line that is now interrupted. Travelers to the airport must expect significantly longer travel times.

Wiener Linien emphasized that the safety of passengers is the top priority. A cable fire in a tunnel section cannot simply be put back into operation without a prior inspection of the entire infrastructure. Only after the investigations are completed and a clearance is issued by the technical department will the section gradually be reopened to traffic.

Investigation Into the Cause Underway

According to those involved, the ÖBB are simultaneously in the middle of their summer construction measures on the Floridsdorf–Praterstern line, which are scheduled to continue until the end of October 2027 as planned. The unforeseen closure of the S-Bahn main line therefore coincides with an already tense construction phase. Transport planners must now coordinate two major construction sites in parallel.

Winder announced that Wiener Linien will inform about the results of the investigation into the cause as soon as reliable findings are available. Until then, the company asks passengers for patience and understanding. Current information is being disseminated via the digital displays at the stops as well as through the official channels of Wiener Linien.

Duration of Closure Still Unclear

According to Wiener Linien, the duration of the closure is currently not yet foreseeable. As long as no results of the technical investigation are available, the affected section between Wien-Mitte and Praterstern will remain completely closed. Passengers are asked to check the current traffic announcements before starting their journey.

According to Wiener Linien, the City of Vienna and the transport authorities are involved in coordinating the measures. Other transport companies in the region have also been informed of the incident so that connecting services and diversions can function smoothly. The goal is to keep the impact on commuter traffic as low as possible.
