Vienna, 14 August 2026

The main S-Bahn line in Vienna has been closed since a cable fire between Wien-Mitte and Praterstern, and the cause of the incident remains unknown according to Wiener Linien.

Background: Planned Closure Not Until 2027

Following a cable fire on the central route of the Vienna S-Bahn between the stations Wien-Mitte and Praterstern, the line remains completely closed. Wiener Linien announced that the originally planned total closure was not scheduled to take effect until after the completion of the ÖBB summer construction project on the Floridsdorf–Praterstern line at the end of October 2027. Due to the unexpected incident, the closure is now taking effect significantly earlier than planned, as a spokesperson explained.
