In Vienna's first municipal district, a new "Space for Science" called Q. is currently being established between Wollzeile and Bäckerstraße, in a building with foundation walls dating back to the 17th century. The institution is supported by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), the University of Vienna, and TU Wien.

A House with History

At the presentation, Q. founding director Christopher Lindinger spoke of a construction site that was already "voll in swing". The project being built here was one of "gesellschaftspolitischer Wichtigkeit", Lindinger said. With the name Q., the intention was deliberately to make a statement: the Q stands for the English word "Question". The goal is to provide answers "in einer Welt, in der Desinformationen einen Aufschwung erleben".

Responsibility for the planning lies with Mohr Niklas Architekten. The plan is to open up the passageway of the heritage-protected building on Wollzeile toward Bäckerstraße. On the ground floor, there will be gastronomy on one side and access to the exhibition spaces on the floor above on the other. The forecourt is to be designed as a consumption-free space. This, it was said, should make Q. also spatially an open place of encounter.
