Vienna, 30 June 2026
The Vienna State Ballet has dedicated its traditional season finale gala to British choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton (1904–1988), including a Vienna premiere of his late work "Rhapsody."
Ballet director Alessandra Ferri shaped the evening as a tribute to one of the most significant choreographers of the 20th century. Ashton, who was born in 1904 in Ecuador and died in 1988 in Sussex, had a lasting influence on classical ballet repertoire through his works. In Vienna, he is known above all for "La Fille mal gardée," a piece that Ferri also highlighted as Ashton's most well-known ballet in the city. In conceiving the gala, Ferri drew inspiration from Ashton's open attitude toward influences from the classical heritage – for instance, when choreographic echoes of "The Sleeping Beauty" become visible.
