Vienna, 15 June 2026
In the greater Vienna area, the species diversity of fruit flies (Drosophila) has declined by approximately 50 percent over roughly three decades, according to a study by the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM) based on citizen science data, presented on Monday.
The research team led by Martin Kapun from NHM Vienna distributed simple fly traps to citizen scientists in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland as part of the "Vienna City Fly" project. After some time, these participants sent the traps back to the scientists with the captured insects. In total, more than 18,000 fruit flies were collected and identified in this way, revealing 13 Drosophila species.
The current species composition was compared with a survey from 1994. The result: species diversity has fallen by around 50 percent over the roughly 30-year period. "Das entspricht einer Reduktion um mehr als 47 Prozent in diesem Zeitraum", said Kapun to the APA.
