Experts describe swallowable gastric balloons as a still-young development in obesity therapy. Daniel Moritz Felsenreich, who was involved in the study, explained the background. Previous experiences from earlier studies in Australia had been taken into account, in which there had been indications of comparable incidents. Nevertheless, the current incident had been surprising and had not occurred at the expected frequency.

Consequences for patients

Those involved described the implant as a product under development because it is still in clinical testing and does not have regular market approval for the European market. MedUni Vienna stressed that the halted study does not mean the therapy is being fundamentally discarded.

After the study stoppage, the affected patients are to continue to receive close medical care. An independent review of the incidents has been initiated, the university announced. Results of this evaluation are expected in the coming weeks.

The case raises questions about the safety assessment of novel medical technology products. Observers point out that swallowable gastric balloons are already being used in several countries without long-term data on possible gastric irritation and membrane damage.

For the affected patients, the halt means that the planned weight reduction must continue without the balloon. Alternative treatments such as nutritional counseling, exercise therapy, or established surgical procedures remain available, according to MedUni Vienna.

According to the researchers, the findings from the Vienna study are to be incorporated into international registries on side effects of such implants. Manufacturers and regulatory authorities have been informed of the incidents.

Overall, the incident shows how important controlled clinical studies are, even for products that may already be in use. The Vienna research group plans to scientifically analyze and publish the data obtained despite the halt.
