Vienna, 10 July 2026
Wiener Linien announced on Friday the completion of tunnel boring work for the first section of the U2xU5 expansion: the 1,300-ton boring machine "Debohra" has, after roughly 21 months, finished its two tubes between Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Augustinplatz.
At a press event at the construction site at Augustinplatz in the Neubau district, representatives of the city, Wiener Linien, and Wiener Stadtwerke spoke of a milestone. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) described reaching the destination as a "technische und menschliche Meisterleistung".
"Debohra" had been boring its way through the Vienna underground since September 2024, starting from Matzleinsdorfer Platz. In total, the machine produced two new U2 tunnel tubes with a combined length of 4.2 kilometers. The route corresponds to roughly 40 football fields placed end to end, it was stated.
