Wiener Linien: Line 49 to be discontinued in autumn, three lines and the U3 will take over

Lines 9 and 52 will serve the feeder routes, so coverage of the surrounding city districts remains secured. Wiener Linien expect that many journeys via the U3 will be equally fast or faster.

With the discontinuation of the 49, transfers at the Hütteldorfer Straße interchange will also change. Those who were previously able to travel directly into the city center will in future need to change between tram and U3.

Wiener Linien point out that with the U3 elevated railway and the supplementary lines, a dense network remains in place in western Vienna. Passenger distribution will be continuously monitored.

For passengers, the change means they should check their usual connections. The changes will be displayed on notices and in digital timetables once the autumn timetable takes effect.

The route section of the previous 49 between Hütteldorfer Straße and Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse, will be fully covered by the extended 46. This eliminates the direct connection of individual stops to the 49 network, which will continue to be provided via short walking routes.

Wiener Linien describe the measure as part of the ongoing adjustment of the line network to passenger flows and to U3 capacities. The autumn timetable will come into force as scheduled in the coming weeks.

In eastern Vienna as well, around Aspern and Donaufelder Straße, the network remains stable. The changes in the west are part of a package designed to balance capacity across several lines.

Passengers who regularly travel between the affected stops can check their personal connections via the Wiener Linien app or the website. Notices at the stations supplement the information.

The City of Vienna and Wiener Linien have prepared the changeover in recent weeks. Complaints about individual missing stops are to be reviewed during ongoing operations.

Overall, the service in western Vienna is maintained, but the direct connection of the 49 is eliminated. Passengers are asked to replan their journeys and allow more time for transfers.
