The Vienna architecture company Liquifer has developed FLECS, a foldable private cabin for future space missions that offers roughly three cubic meters of personal space when set up and weighs about 100 kilograms.

The system is called FLECS – Foldable Living Environment for Crew Support – and is aimed at onboard crews of future space stations. When unfolded, the module can also be deployed in about one minute under low gravity – such as in Earth or lunar orbit – explained René Waclavicek of Liquifer. When not needed, it can be folded up to save space.

From Concept to Finished Cabin

The Vienna team is part of the design and test team for the international habitation module Lunar I-Hab, which is part of the planned Gateway space station in lunar orbit as part of the Artemis program. The Vienna team is led by Barbara Imhof and René Waclavicek.
