In the historic torture trial at the Vienna Regional Court, the verdict against two former Syrian officials – accused of serious human rights violations during the Syrian revolution – is expected Monday afternoon.
Charges and Background
After 13 hearing days, the Vienna torture trial, which is considered historic, is nearing its conclusion. The defendants are former Brigadier General Khaled Al-Halabi and former police officer Moussab Abou R. Both most recently lived in Austria. If convicted in line with the charges, the defendants face up to ten years in prison.
The first defendant, Khaled Al H., is charged by the prosecutor with the crimes of torture, severe coercion, sexual coercion, and a large number of serious bodily harm offenses. The second defendant, Moussab Abou R., must answer for serious bodily harm, severe coercion, and sexual coercion. The two attempted in court to downplay their respective roles in the Syrian state apparatus.
