The biologist Ulrich Technau, working at the University of Vienna, together with his team has identified the Notch signaling pathway as the central control mechanism by which cells of the sea anemone "Nematostella vectensis" correctly re-sort into different tissue types after being separated.

In a study published in the journal "Nature Communications," the research team shows that the Notch signaling pathway controls the formation of the body axis and the organization of different tissue layers. It accomplishes something similar in humans when an embryo develops.
