Plzeň, 28 August 2026

Viktoria Plzeň overturned a 3:0 first-leg deficit against Red Star Belgrade on Thursday, eliminating the Serbian champions 5:1 after extra time in the Conference League qualifying round.

A hopeless situation before kick-off

Even before kick-off, the situation seemed hopeless for the Czech side. Red Star Belgrade, the Serbian champions and boasting the prominent signing of Marko Arnautovic, took a comfortable 3:0 lead into the second leg of the Conference League qualifying tie. The team featuring the 35-year-old ÖFB legionnaire appeared to be cruising into the next round.

But what followed will go down as one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent Conference League history. Plzeň fought their way back goal by goal and forced extra time through an impressive fightback. The home crowd in Plzeň did the rest, driving on the side managed by coach Miroslav Koubek time and again.
