Villach attacker transferred to Stein – detention under intensified conditions

The Syrian was finally sentenced to life imprisonment in Klagenfurt at the end of May. He was charged with having stabbed indiscriminately at teenagers and young men with a folding knife in downtown Villach on 15 February 2025. He killed a 14-year-old schoolboy and injured five other persons, some of them with life-threatening injuries.

Background of the act of 15 February 2025

During the trial, he stood by the act and declared that he wanted to kill again. In addition, the Syrian stated that he had acted in the name of the terrorist Islamic State (IS). The man is considered highly dangerous; he is believed to have been radicalized through IS propaganda videos on TikTok.

The transfer to Stein Prison in Lower Austria is regarded as one of the most secure detention facilities in Austria and is used for inmates with special security needs. Judicial circles justified the step with the ongoing threat potential and the accumulation of security incidents in Klagenfurt. Details on the exact course of the transport were not published for security reasons.

The attack of 15 February 2025 had caused dismay in Villach and far beyond. According to the investigations, the perpetrator's motive is linked to Islamist propaganda that he is said to have consumed via social media. The victim, a 14-year-old schoolboy, as well as the five other persons, some of them severely injured, had not provoked the attack in the pedestrian zone of the city center.

Life imprisonment and possible release date

The final conviction to life imprisonment means that, under Austrian criminal law, the perpetrator could be conditionally released at the earliest after a minimum detention period of fifteen years. A court decides on such a release on the basis of a risk assessment. In view of the continuing radicalization and the declared willingness to kill again, a release in the foreseeable future is regarded as unlikely.

With the transfer to Stein, the Austrian judiciary is responding to the inmate's behavior during his sentence. It had already become known beforehand that the man had repeatedly manipulated objects in Klagenfurt and behaved aggressively toward staff. According to reports, the new accommodation is intended to enable more seamless surveillance.

Security situation and consequences in the execution of the sentence

The public prosecutor's office and the Ministry of the Interior see the case as evidence that radicalized lone perpetrators also pose a permanent security challenge within the prison system. Experts are discussing intensified surveillance measures and more intensive deradicalization work, although the effectiveness of such measures with Islamist-motivated offenders remains controversial.

For the bereaved of the killed 14-year-old schoolboy and the survivors, some of them severely injured, the case is not yet closed. In addition to the criminal proceedings, civil claims are pending, on which decisions are to be made in the coming months. Following the attack, the city of Villach has announced a permanent memorial in the city center to commemorate the victim.
