The Austrian Newspaper Association (VÖZ) has welcomed a draft law providing state subsidies for newspaper delivery, describing the planned funding as decisive for securing media diversity in Austria.

VÖZ sees delivery aid as central to press plurality

In a statement released this week, the VÖZ argued that the proposed subsidy would help maintain a broad range of print titles across the country. VÖZ's Gerald Grünberger said the measure addressed a structural problem that had intensified in recent years as delivery costs rose and print circulation fell.

Under the draft, a publicly funded payment would be linked to the number of printed copies of daily or weekly newspapers delivered to subscribers in Austria. Supporters say the mechanism is designed to shore up regional and local titles that struggle to remain viable without a reliable distribution network.
