Thuringia's Minister-President Mario Voigt (CDU) has announced an initiative to allow reimported Simson mopeds in Germany to once again travel at 60 km/h, and has announced talks with the EU in Brussels for this purpose.

The two-wheelers of the Simson brand have been a cult object in eastern Germany for decades. Models such as the Schwalbe, Star, Sperber and S50/51 were once produced in Suhl in Thuringia during the GDR era. A small post-production run ended in 2002. To this day, an estimated tens of thousands of Simson mopeds are on the roads, especially in rural regions of eastern Germany.

The background to the initiative is a legal imbalance: Simson mopeds that were already registered in the GDR are allowed to travel at 60 km/h on the basis of a special provision in the Unification Treaty. Reimported vehicles, on the other hand, must comply with the EU-wide moped speed limit of 45 km/h. Voigt told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur in Erfurt: "Die Situation ist allerdings schwierig" and announced: "Wir sind da weiter dran".
