Wolfsburg, July 22, 2026

Volkswagen announced on Wednesday that it will bring first cars with Level-3 autonomous driving functions to market in China from the second half of 2027, and is expanding its collaboration with Horizon Robotics for this purpose.

The Wolfsburg-based automaker is extending its existing partnership with the Chinese AI specialist Horizon Robotics. Through the joint venture Carizon, Horizon Robotics' AI model is to be used for the development of autonomous driving functions. "Deliveries of such vehicles with Level-3 functions are to begin in the second half of 2027," Volkswagen said. The joint venture Carizon was already founded in 2022 and forms the basis of the now-expanded collaboration.

What does Level 3 mean?

At automation Level 3, the person at the wheel may, in clearly defined use cases such as on the highway, temporarily take their hands off the steering wheel and no longer monitor the traffic. The vehicle takes over the driving task completely in these situations. Volkswagen also emphasized that the use of artificial intelligence is intended to accelerate the development of autonomous systems.
