Berlin, 11 July 2026
Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has announced a joint initiative by Germany and France to resolve the Lebanon conflict, without providing details on the planned undertaking.
The announcement came ahead of the Franco-German Ministerial Council, which is to take place next week. Speaking to the Saturday edition of the "Tagesspiegel" newspaper, Wadephul said Berlin and Paris wanted to formulate a coordinated policy for Lebanon in order to increase the chance of peace in the Middle East. "Wir wollen mit Frankreich eine gemeinsame Politik für den Libanon formulieren, um die Chance auf einen Frieden im Nahen und Mittleren Osten zu erhöhen", the CDU politician said.
Wadephul gave no concrete details on how the initiative is to be structured or what specific measures are planned. He also did not provide a timeline. The wording left open whether it would involve diplomatic steps, humanitarian aid, or a combination.
