Johann Wadephul (CDU) travelled on Monday to Washington and to the three South American Mercosur states of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil for several days of talks, in order to consult with Marco Rubio on NATO, Ukraine and the further expansion of the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur.

Wadephul planned to meet his counterpart Rubio in the US capital in the afternoon. According to the Foreign Office, the meeting is taking place in preparation for the NATO summit in Ankara next week. At the centre are to be a new burden-sharing arrangement within the alliance as well as reliable, long-term support for Ukraine.

Before his departure, Wadephul had stressed the importance of Western cohesion. "Unsere euro-atlantische Sicherheit hängt entschieden davon ab, dass wir auch in Zukunft so entschlossen wie bisher in der Nato zusammenstehen", said the CDU politician. There he wanted to discuss how the burdens within NATO could be redistributed. He also announced that he would speak with Rubio about long-term support for Ukraine.
