Washington, June 23, 2026

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio departed on Tuesday for a three-day trip to the Gulf region and will visit the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain through Thursday.

Background: framework agreement in Bürgenstock

The State Department announced that Rubio will visit the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain from Tuesday through Thursday. Visits to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain are planned. The trip is the first visit by a US cabinet member to the region since the signing of the agreement between Washington and Tehran last week.

The background to the trip is the framework agreement signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday last week. In negotiations held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, the two warring parties agreed on a roadmap for a peace agreement, which is to be concluded within 60 days. According to his spokesperson, Rubio intends to explain the preliminary agreement with Iran as well as the efforts to ensure free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
