The western railway line between Linz and St. Valentin will remain only very restrictedly passable over the weekend following an overhead line damage on Thursday evening, as ÖBB announced on Saturday.

Cause and extent of the damage

ÖBB has set up a so-called emergency service program in order to maintain traffic on the damaged western line between Linz and St. Valentin. "On Thursday evening an overhead line tore. The cable fell to the ground," the federal railways explained. The fallen cable "scorched other cables there that belong to a signal box," making the damage to the infrastructure significantly greater than initially assumed.

The repair of the overhead line has since been completed. However, the remediation work on the severely damaged signal box is still ongoing, as ÖBB announced: "die Arbeiten am stark beschädigten Stellwerk laufen aber noch, so die ÖBB". As long as the repairs are not fully completed, the emergency service program applies, which according to the railway has been running "stable since Friday" and will be maintained until Sunday, 19 July, at 23:59 for the time being.
