WHO convenes emergency committee over Ebola outbreak in Central Africa

An epidemiologist monitoring the situation in the region spoke in an interview of "Alarmstimmung" in the region and said this mood was "absolut angesagt". Local people are unsettled by the speed with which infections are accumulating in neighboring areas. This assessment is consistent with reports from local health authorities.

International response: WHO, Africa CDC and Charité

Africa CDC, the health agency of the African Union, says it is working closely with the health ministries of the affected countries. The WHO is also supporting national authorities with case finding, laboratory testing, and the establishment of treatment centers. An Ebola patient was also admitted to Berlin's Charité hospital at the request of the United States, underscoring the international character of the crisis.

The Ebola virus is one of the most dangerous pathogens in the world. It causes hemorrhagic fever which, if untreated, is fatal in a high proportion of cases. The virus is transmitted mainly through contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or animals. Previous outbreaks in Central Africa, such as those in eastern Congo between 2018 and 2020, claimed thousands of lives.

Possible consequences of an international emergency

If the emergency committee classifies the situation as an international emergency, further containment measures would be triggered. These include travel recommendations, increased international funding, and the coordinated deployment of vaccines and protective equipment. At the same time, the WHO stresses that travel or trade restrictions generally do more harm than good.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo already has experience dealing with Ebola: experimental vaccines, considered effective, were used in previous outbreaks. However, armed conflicts in parts of Ituri Province hamper access for aid workers and the supply of the population. Medical infrastructure in the region is also considered vulnerable.

Lessons from previous outbreaks

The WHO announced it would closely monitor the development of the situation and regularly provide updates on new case numbers. As of publication, no complete figures on infections and deaths were available. The exact extent of the spread beyond the previous hotspots was also still unclear.

International health experts see the outbreak as evidence of how quickly infectious diseases can spread in a connected world. They are calling for greater investment in local health systems, early warning systems, and vaccine stockpiles. The coming days are considered crucial to prevent further spread.
